Job Summary

The Digital Library Project Manager is the library’s champion of Utah Digital Newspaper projects as well as helping to implement new digital initiatives for the library and our partners. While this position is housed within the Digital Library Services Department, it has the unique opportunity to work with partners throughout the library, state, and region. The job will allow you to combine your technical knowledge, communication skills, and project management experience to ensure that digital newspapers from Utah and other digital projects are accessible to researchers around the world now and in the future.

Responsibilities

Forecast, develop, and implement policies, procedures, workflows, and strategies related to digital newspaper projects at the Library

Work closely with project partners and vendors to ensure that high quality newspaper projects are completed in a timely manner

Prepare proposals for external funding for digital newspapers

Troubleshoot issues related to UDN

Maintain Utah Digital Newspapers website

Market and promote UDN to internal and external customers

Assist in efforts within Digital Library Services for implementing new initiatives such as Omeka, ArchivesSpace, GIS projects, digital humanities projects, and other digital library projects

Potentially supervise full-time staff or PT students based on project needs and budgets

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Three to four years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences

Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with digitization issues, tools, standards, and best practices

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, with a wide range of groups and individuals, both internal and external to the Library

Strong technical expertise with digital objects in a library or cultural heritage organization

Experience with National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) projects and standards

Experience implementing new digital initiatives within an academic library
Demonstrated understanding of copyright laws and rights management issues in a digital environment

Experience working in a rapidly changing technological environment
Knowledge of grant funding agencies and participation in grant writing and oversight

Experience applying Dublin Core Metadata Elements and technical metadata for digital objects

Experience with creating and maintaing websites

Experience with digital asset management systems (e.g. Hydra, Fedora, CONTENTdm, DSpace)

Proficiency using FTP, VPN, shared drives and Microsoft Office Suite software, particularly Excel
