Job Summary

The Mountain West Digital Library (MWDL) seeks an energetic, innovative, and accomplished professional for the position of Web Development Assistant. This is an excellent opportunity to work with collaborative and enthusiastic colleagues who are dedicated to building services for digital libraries and archives. Hosted at the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah, along with the rest of the MWDL staff, this position serves the Mountain West region as a key part of the MWDL Service Hub for the Digital Public Library of America, which aggregates metadata from partnering libraries, museums, and archives in five states for sharing both regionally via the MWDL portal at http://mwdl.org/ and nationally via the DPLA portal at http://dp.la/.

While this position focuses primarily on assisting with auditing, editing and designing web pages on the MWDL portal that hosts collections from the various constituents (partners) of MWDL, it will also provide an opportunity to work on social media promotions for MWDL news, content, and collaboration efforts, while also assisting with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) tasks for MWDL. The SEO task set entails analyzing website traffic, collaborating with MWDL team on SEO best practices for the web portal, and studying opportunities and trends in SEO standards to achieve maximum visibility on the world wide web. Work across organizational lines is encouraged to support and strengthen services within the MWDL community.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for editing and designing web pages on the MWDL website (http://www.mwdl.org/), analyzing website traffic, collaborating with team on SEO best practices for maxiimum visibility on search portals. This position will assist with social medial promotions for MWDL on relevant websites, and performing other duties as they arise.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of computer operations experience or equivalency required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required. Previous customer service experience is preferred.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences

The ability to perform detailed and often repetitive work on a computer. Experience with Dreamweaver, PHP, and general familiarity with website management tools and workflows. Knowledge of, or experience with SEO tools and workflows is required. English language skills (grammar, spelling, written and oral) a must. Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships within the Department and the MWDL community. Knowledge of and interest in the history of the Western United States, especially Utah, is preferred. This position requires a person who is well-organized and can keep track of multiple assignments in a professional library environment.
