Job Summary

The Perception, Cognition, and Expertise (PCE) Laboratory, headed by Professor A. Mark Williams, is located in the College of Health at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. Our mission is to investigate the role of perceptual, cognitive, and neural processes during performance and the implications of this work for training and the development of domain-specific expertise. We aim to help facilitate the acquisition of expertise in the general population, as well as in various clinical groups.

We are currently recruiting PhD students to start in the Fall 2017 Semester. In addition to traditional graduate school requirements (e.g., scholastic record, previous research experience, test scores), our laboratory places particular emphasis on students with an educational and research background in one or more of the following concentration areas:
• Applied Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience
• Experimental Psychology
• Cognitive Psychology
• Motor Behavior and/or Motor Learning and/or Motor Control

Responsibilities

Students are expected to successfully complete all requirements toward the PhD degree and actively contribute to the research mission of the PCE Lab. In addition to teaching requirements per assistantship, graduate student responsibilities include participation in ongoing projects and data collections, completing literature review and developing research aims, data analytics and hypothesis testing, technical writing, attending intramural and extramural conferences to present research, grantsmanship, and mentoring fellow graduate students and undergraduate researchers.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should have (or be expecting) a Bachelor’s (or equivalency) or Master’s degree in a related discipline by the time of application. Please consult the Graduate School for additional requirements for international students.

Preferences

• Experience recording and analyzing eye movements/gaze behavior
• Technical competencies in assessing movement kinematics using motion capture
• Instrumentation expertise measuring psychophysiological or neural indices of performance (e.g., EEG, EMG, SCR, fMRI)
• Previous experience conducting research using clinical populations
• Programming, analytical, and/or statistical proficiencies
• Excellent time management and organizational skills
