If you have a keen eye for detail and an interest in history, research, and genealogy, you may be just the person to help us develop a regional vocabulary for personal and corporate names. The Marriott Library, in partnership with several other regional institutions will be developing a service to help us describe digital items more consistently and accurately. Your job will be to review lists of names and identify anything that is missing or incorrect, using a variety of sources such as obituary information and the Library of Congress Name Authorities. Basic data entry will also be required, as you enhance our site with updated information, and help us keep track of improvements. You don’t need a background in a technical field; if you think this job is a good fit for you, please apply no matter what your major or prior work experience might be. You will be working independently much of the time, so you will need to be comfortable analyzing complex information, making decisions, and working with (or learning to use) software such as Excel, Google Sheets, Open Refine, and delimited text files. This is a temporary, one-year position.
The metadata assistant is responsible for auditing and quality assurance for digital collections information. Working with a metadata librarian, the person in this position will document areas for improvement in the personal and corporate names represented in digital library collections by reviewing collections information and existing names and recommending changes.
The metadata assistant may also assist in analyzing, describing and entering data for the names used in digital collections by recording statistics for names that are updated or revised; and performs other projects as they arise, such as updating existing digital collections.
The ability to identify the subject of photographs and textual documents, to assign appropriate subject headings and keywords, and to identify authors and titles. The ability to use the internet and other reference resources to discover accurate and relevant information about digitized objects. The ability to summarize the textual content of a written document in a digital collection.
Performs targeted metadata clean-up tasks by enhancing or correcting information in digital collections and the library catalog. The ability to perform repetitive tasks like searching, copying and pasting information efficiently and accurately
One year of computer operations experience or equivalency required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required. Previous customer service experience is preferred.

The ability to perform detailed and often repetitive work on a computer. Experience using a computer and Windows software; and willingness and ability to learn and use new software as required. English language skills (grammar, spelling, written and oral) a must. Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships within the Department and the Library. Knowledge of and interest in the history of the western United States, especially Utah, is preferred. Knowledge of, or experience with, metadata cataloging or previous experience working in an academic library are also desirable. This position requires a person who is well-organized and can keep track of multiple assignments in a professional library environment.
