Job Summary

Reporting to the Coordinator of Chat and Email Reference, this position will provide reference assistance to University faculty, staff and students in person and electronically. Some of those shifts will be on the weekends and in the evenings with a weekly schedule of Tuesday through Friday, 11:00am – 8:00pm and Saturday, 10:00am – 6:00pm. The incumbent will assist with the creation of online learning tools for such things as videos, Canvas, LibGuides and other websites. This position will assist with literature searches, grant writing, data collection, and data analysis along with basic office assistance including scheduling, copying, scanning, and delivery of marketing materials. For this position, one year of education is equivalent to two years of experience.


Provide reference assistance in person and electronically.
• Provide in-person and online reference assistance.
• Be available to take additional shifts as needed to fill open shifts each week.
• Working with the Coordinators of Online and Desk Reference, plan and implement cross-
unit training.

Provide research assistance including
• Search for current literature on a topic and create a report for administrators.
• Write and edit grant proposals.
• Collect data and provide an initial analysis.
• Assist with the design and implementation of survey research.

Provide assistance with the creation of online learning tools.
• Maintain LibGuides or Canvas with up-to-date links and online tools.
• Assist with the development, creation, and management of final production of video or audio learning tools.
• Assist with organization of information on websites.
• Assist with online exhibits using tools like Omeka.

Provide assistance as needed for such things as:
• Scheduling RUS events, instruction, or workshops.
• Distribute marketing materials across campus.
• Printing, photocopying and scanning.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years library experience or equivalency; knowledge of specialized library techniques and principles as well as research and organizational skills required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. Some supervisory experience may be preferred.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.


A Bachelor’s degree especially a degree with a focus on communication, media production or media editing.

Knowledge of and ability to use Marriott Library databases, catalog, and websites to find journal articles, books, and other information.

Experience working in an office environment with administrative assistant duties.

Ability to take initiative to solve problems, communicate solutions, and improve communication among a diverse group of people.

Ability to work independently without much direction or guidance after an initial 3-month training period.

Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as a member of a team.

Demonstrated proficiency and capability with information technology systems in the context of an academic library.

Reading, writing, or speaking skills in a second language.
