Job Summary

University Information Technology has an opening for Cable Technicians to support its Common Infrastructure Services department.

The cabling team provides 24/7/365 support to the networks across the University campus, hospitals, and clinics. The Cable Technician 1 is an entry- level position that assists in the operation and maintenance of the University vertical and horizontal copper and fiber optic cable plant. The position performs surveys to collect and document information about the cable plant, and assists in performing copper cable termination, installation, testing, cable management, and documentation. Also, when needed, provides support to the fiber team. The Cable Technician 1 maintains a tidy work environment.

Essential Functions
• Enters cable and infrastructure data into databases
• Utilizes computer programs/software
• Keeps communication closets and work environments tidy
• Provide physical labor assistance on copper and fiber projects

Minimum Qualifications

This is an entry level position. The ability to distinguish colors, lift 50 pounds, work on ladders and in confined spaces and possess a valid Utah Driver?s license is required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communications skills are also required.

Previous related work experience installing and terminating voice and data cabling preferred.

Prefer some experience working with copper (Cat 5, Cat 6, and Cat 6A) cable; able to lift 80 pounds; experience installing and testing copper phone and network cables; effective human relations and customer communication skills; aptitude and willingness to learn copper and fiber skills; demonstrates pride in workmanship. Must be able to distinguish copper and fiber jacket color differences; must be punctual and consistently work hard. Must be able to learn the skills of a Cable and Fiber Technician. Able to take direction, work independently, and maintain a professional appearance and dress.
