Book Arts Studio Assistants work as part of a team of faculty and staff in a busy studio environment. Assistants use specialized equipment for the preparation of materials for workshops and outreach programs; assist with projects for the Library, Book Arts Program, and Red Butte Press; organize and maintain studio spaces and storage; assist visiting artists; support K-12 outreach initiatives; help with communications and publicity; and contribute to exhibitions installation. The ideal candidate enjoys handwork, is willing to take on repetitive and meticulous tasks, possesses strong communication skills, values working with a diverse group of people, and is interested in learning new skills. Job emphasis will vary based on the skills and interests of the person hired, special project timelines, and programmatic need.
Preparation of materials, studio upkeep, and general office duties in support of all Program and Red Butte Press initiatives including K-12 Outreach, Community Programming, Academic Courses, Exhibitions, and Red Butte Press editions. Depending on the level of previous and acquired experience, this position might also act as teaching assistant for K-12 and community programming. Advanced skills would allow teaching assistance for classes.
Six months clerical or customer service experience required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
Studying Art, Art History, English, and/or Book Arts. Experience with bookmaking or other hand-skills required, printmaking/letterpress strongly preferred. Exceptional communication skills, demonstrated eye for fine-tuned details, and strong record-keeping capabilities and organizational competencies required. Proficiency in Office software required; Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign preferred.
Because of the nature of detailed and accurate record-keeping for grant purposes and the importance of time-intensive, detail-oriented preparation of materials, this position demands painstaking attention to detail. Because this position is in constant contact with patrons, strong communication skills are essential.
