Job Summary

From oral histories and music to home movies, news, and independent film, the audio-visual materials in Special Collections provide a dynamic glimpse into Utah’s art, history and culture. If you like working with computers and have a passion for history, for film, for the stories of people and the places where they live, consider joining the Audio-Visual Archive team. Edit digital audio and video, take pleasure in creating order out of chaos, preserve unique historical materials for future generations, and help visitors to the library discover something wonderful they didn’t know existed.

Responsibilities

Analyze quality of digital audio and video files and recommend actions based on archival best practices and library policy

Record and analyze data in archive databases, spreadsheets and management systems

Edit, describe, and compress digital audio and video files for upload to digital library

Organize and describe physical and digital audio-visual materials

Create descriptive EAD finding aids for AV collections using XML code

Conduct research as necessary for special projects, screenings and patron requests

Select and edit excerpts from digital audio-visual collections into trailers and visual aids for exhibits, outreach and teaching

Add closed and open captions to videos displayed in the library and online

Recognize items that need special preservation treatment

Repair and rehouse audio-visual materials for preservation and long term storage

Keep detailed records of all projects

Provide digital media to archive patrons

Assist patrons in Special Collections reading room

Other duties as assigned in relation to the operations of the Multimedia Archives

Minimum Qualifications

One year of computer operations experience or equivalency required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required. Previous customer service experience is preferred.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences

Ability to operate PC and Mac computers

Working knowledge of video and audio editing software, file formats and codecs

Ability to work with Microsoft Excel, databases, complex software, and XML code

Ability to work 15-19 hours per week


Ability to lift 30 pounds

Demonstrated organizational abilities and good attention to detail

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions

Ability to work effectively with limited supervision, make independent decisions and take initiative on projects and problem solving

Ability to work as part of a team

Good interpersonal skills for interaction at reference desk

Interest in the history of visual and aural media

Interest in the history of Utah and the West
