Job Summary

The Senior Director of Advancement (SDOA) for the Cardiovascular Initiative will seek philanthropic support for a comprehensive initiative focused on cardiovascular health and wellness. This important and highly visible position will manage relationships with a portfolio of donors who have the capability of making major to principal gifts in the range of $100,000 to $1 million or more. The SDOA will staff and support the divisions of Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiothoracic Surgery, building a robust community of philanthropic support by engaging and involving physician leadership, administrators, and their care teams.

The SDOA will articulate and execute an advancement plan for the Cardiovascular Initiative, focused on best practices including goals and metrics, and well-articulated philanthropic priorities, leading to the procurement of private support of the clinical, research and educational areas of the initiative. The SDOA will create and work with and staff volunteer advisory boards/committees whose members have capacity to make significant contributions to the aligned areas. The SDOA will be expected to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward these very important patients and their families, as well as alumni, parents, and friends and other benefactors of the University for both outright and planned gifts as well as appropriate corporate and foundation funding sources.

The SDOA works closely with colleagues in the Office of Advancement for University of Utah Health, administrators, faculty and others to build and implement effective strategies and collaborative partnerships that will lead to beneficial long-term relationships and significant gift support from these prospective benefactors.

The SDOA reports to the Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer and the Chiefs of the Divisions of Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiothoracic Surgery.

    1. Collaborates with the division Chiefs of Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer of University of Utah Health to create the vision for an impactful, multi-disciplinary cardiovascular initiative and establish priorities for fundraising.

    2. Develops a strong working knowledge of the divisions’ research, clinical, and operational priorities.

    3. Identifies, qualifies, solicits and stewards gifts for the Cardiovascular Initiative (CVI). An emphasis will be placed on identifying and soliciting six to seven figure gifts.

    4. Plans, implements, and manages a major gift fundraising program to meet the priorities of the divisions by:
      a. Working closely with the division chiefs and the Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer to establish major gift and annual fund raising goals based upon assessment of the qualified donor portfolio and CVI priorities;

      b. Identifying and evaluating the giving potential of prospects while developing innovative strategies for cultivation and solicitation;

      c. Developing in consultation with the chairs and Deputy Chief Philanthropy officer, an annual work plan, a schedule of fundraising goals and proposals to be presented, and planned visits in accordance with institutional standards;

      d. Scheduling and arranging on-site and off-site regional meetings and cultivation recognition events such as chair and laboratory dedications, cultivation and stewardship visits to major gift donors and prospects; developing agendas and coordinating the participation of faculty, administration leaders, and volunteers;

      e. Personally communicating with and visiting major prospects and donors; working with the Director of Planned Giving to give provide information on specific devices for giving, both current and deferred, to maximize gift and tax benefits;

      f. Preparing and directing preparation of leadership, principal and major gift proposals, solicitation letters, cultivation materials and stewardship information for major gift prospects and donors;

      g. Identifying, enlisting, motivating, guiding and supporting CVI related faculty and volunteers for participation in major gift solicitations;

      h. Managing and staffing a volunteer advisory board;

      i. Preparing and delivering presentations as they relate to fundraising;

      j. Providing education and training to faculty and volunteers about the dynamics of major gift fundraising;

      k. Participating in administrative and faculty meetings within the CVI and the departments and divisions therein, as well as participating in administrative and staff meetings in the Office of Advancement;

      l. Quickly becoming familiar with the history of the CVI, University of Utah Health, and its current strengths and future ambitions.

    5. Communicates routinely and effectively with the Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer, Chief Philanthropy Officer, initiative leadership and other senior leaders who are actively involved with pending and/or outstanding solicitations with major benefactors.

    6. Submits regular reports to the Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer, the division chairs of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, and other institutional leaders as required.

    7. Works with division chairs staff and the Director of Stewardship to ensure endowment reports are completed on time; research any questions related to the reports.

    8. May plan, assign and review the work of support staff.

    9. Seeks appropriate training opportunities including training necessary for proficiency in the use of gift planning techniques and partners with the Director of Planned Giving to build that program.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area, or equivalency, and seven years of demonstrated successful fundraising experience. Six figure fundraising experience may be required of the hiring department. Advanced skill to meet predetermined goals and objectives through effective program/project planning, organization, execution and evaluation. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Prior fundraising experience in higher education is preferred.

At least seven years of progressively responsible fundraising experience in academic medicine, with a solid track record of closing 6-7 figure gifts.

The intellectual depth, maturity, wisdom, humor and collaborative skills to garner the trust and confidence of division chairs, faculty, senior advancement leadership, colleagues, and other constituents.
Ability to work within a complex, multi-divisional and multi-departmental environment to establish priorities, set objectives, and achieve stated goals.
Superlative interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of educational and social backgrounds and to demonstrate an honest respect for each individual.
A broad understanding of multi-faceted campaign planning, implementation and management.

Superior written and oral communication skills; the ability to articulate and translate eloquently, the complex goals, mission and aspirations of the Department of Surgery’s Cardiovascular Initiative and its programs for all audiences; clarity and elegance in writing and speaking.

A strong desire to champion the values of University of Utah Health.
Demonstrated ability to establish, cultivate and steward strong relationships with donors, physicians, patients, alumni and friends to build and maintain lifelong partnerships and trust while aligning the donor’s passions and goals with the institution.

Knowledge of the fundraising continuum and related principals and policies.

Knowledge of corporate and foundation fundraising and gift planning vehicles.

Knowledge of physician engagement/grateful patient programs.
